How do you fall in love? A perplexing question really and one that I have oft asked myself. Will it hurt when I fall, will I even know it has happened? It seems so chaotic, so unpredictable. We hear the love ballads of country music, we see the fantastic stories of those up on the silver screen, we imagine the knight and princess in many of our childhood fairy tales. Does truth exist in any of those stories? If it does where is it and how can I have that kind of fairy tale love? I want to be a prince, a mighty knight whose shining armor is bloodied by the throws of a battle waged to win the heart of a princess whose coy beauty and adventurous spirit are more than worth the fight. Is that what we call “falling in love”? It doesn’t seem that way to me; a knight who fights for the love a beauty seems deliberate, a choice if you will. That then presents a problem, am I supposed to fall in love or am I supposed to fight for it? Let’s see, I could fall into that pit we call love and scrape a knee or brake a wrist on the way down, then show off my wounds to the woman who has fallen in the pit with me. Or, I could fight the battle, spill the blood of a dragon who would take the life of my princess if I don’t stop him. The fight will be hard, the sacrifices many, the wounds deep, but the reward worth it. The question becomes, which one of these scenarios is “true” love and how do I get it in my own life? I am rather inclined to believe that love is more a matter of the will than of the heart and to have true love in our lives we must fight for it.
God Bless,
Richard
